About the artist

Maya grew up walking the breakwater at Ogden Point and still paints there most mornings before the cruise ships arrive. Her small oil panels catch the minutes when sea fog lifts off the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains appear, then vanish again.

The challenge

Selling quiet, small-format work in a market that rewards big statement pieces.

Our approach

A tightly edited series of twelve 30 × 40 cm panels, hung at eye level with generous spacing, and a first-light painting demo at the opening.

“I bought one panel and went back for a second the next day. It's the light I see from my kitchen window.”
Priya N.Collector, Fairfield

About the artist

Daniel carves sheets of birch plywood up to two metres tall, then prints them by hand with a wooden spoon in his Fernwood studio. His forests are built from thousands of carved lines, each one a mark you can see up close.

The challenge

Making a traditional, slow medium visible to younger collectors.

Our approach

Live carving sessions during First Friday walks, short process videos, and an affordable small-print edition alongside the large works.

“Watching Daniel pull a print off the block is pure theatre. Our members talked about it for weeks.”
Colin B.Programs lead, Island Print Society

About the artist

Elise forages her dyes along the shoreline and in the Garry oak meadows of Beacon Hill Park, then weaves on a 1940s floor loom in her James Bay apartment. Each piece records a season's colour.

The challenge

Textile art is often filed under craft, which limits pricing and gallery interest.

Our approach

Exhibit as fine art with museum-style labels, dye-source notes, and a catalogue essay by a guest curator.

“Elise's work changed how our visitors see textiles. It was the most photographed piece in the show.”
Dr. Ana RuizGuest curator

About the artist

Tomás fires a hand-built anagama kiln on a farm near Brentwood Bay twice a year. Volunteers stoke it around the clock for four days; the ash that settles on each pot becomes its glaze.

The challenge

Only two firings a year means limited stock and long gaps between sales.

Our approach

A collectors' waiting list, kiln-opening events that sell out in advance, and a small-works shelf at three member galleries.

“You're not just buying a pot, you're buying a firing you can feel. I visit every kiln opening now.”
Jordan L.Visitor from Seattle

About the artist

Hana's downtown studio overlooks Chinatown's rooftops. She paints big, slow canvases that shift as you walk past them, layering thinned acrylic until the colour seems to glow from behind.

The challenge

An emerging artist with strong work but no agent, no CV beyond Victoria and no national exposure.

Our approach

Studio visits for agents during Collectors' Preview Night, a professional portfolio pack, and entries to two national competitions.

“Hana's canvases hold a room. She is exactly the kind of artist we look for at this stage.”

About the artist

A retired hydrographer, Ruth turned forty years of charting the coast into art. She draws depth contours by hand, then layers in found nautical charts, tide tables and gold leaf to mark places that mattered to her.

The challenge

A late-career artist with a devoted local following and no online presence.

Our approach

A first artist profile, an illustrated story about her charting career, and inclusion in the Gallery Walk map.

“Ruth's maps made me see the harbour I've lived beside for thirty years in a completely new way.”
